Webships
The Marine Society pioneered the concept of webships in 1999: ships which provide a unique insight into contemporary life at sea.
The idea is simple, the results are often fascinating...
Through these freely accessible pages we profile and trace the progress and onboard happenings of two ships.
We do this by means of regular email despatches direct from the ships themselves together with photographs taken onboard.
The material covered includes factual data; location; meteorological information; cargo; and places visited.
But we are also introduced to members of the crew who tell us what life is really like at the sharp end and what they get up to on a daily basis.
In short, we get to understand what life is like at sea ... without getting wet!
Everyone onboard is encouraged to make a contribution. The whole despatch is skilfully blended to make a fascinating and unique insight into life at sea today and posted in our website with free access for all.
Once the despatch is posted it is supplemented by content that links directly to the national curriculum, with a primary target set as Key Stage 3 (11-14 year olds) and secondary target of Key Stage 4 (14-16).
We are delighted that this project is being developed with the support and co-operation of BP Shipping and the
Merchant Navy Training Board.
We are commencing our enhanced online coverage with one of BP Shippings newest vessels, the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carrier
British Trader.
