Information, Advice & Guidance

Matrix Standard
We provide and facilitate for seafarers and the Sea Cadet Corps a wide ranging programme of student-centred and employment-focused learning and a support infrastructure that promotes and sustains a culture of continuous learning, professional and personal development thereby serving to maximise opportunities for enhancing individual performance, growth and employability.

Policy

We offer free, impartial and confidential information, advice and guidance (IAG) to professional seafarers and adults with the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC).

Providing IAG allows learners to decide for themselves the best way forward with all the information available to them.

IAG within MSCoS comes seafarer-friendly taking into account the circumstances in which our learners work – at sea, usually with no access to the internet and often with limited email contact.

All learners are offered advice and guidance from initial contact, throughout the course and upon completion of the course a learner is encouraged to maintain contact with advice offered on their next steps in education.

Where we do not ourselves offer a course, we'll signpost the enquirer to the most appropriate organization able to fulfill their needs.

All staff who offer advice and guidance are competent and take into account learners’ individual circumstances when listening to their queries and questions.

Empathy with a seafaring lifestyle is important and the college is careful to ensure that its partner providers are aware of the special circumstances which face a seafarer seeking to continue his/her learning.

Royal Navy/Royal Marines personnel currently receive advice and guidance through the Navy Education and Training Officers (NETSO’s) within the service. MSCoS complements this service by providing a choice of GCSEs and A Levels among other vocational qualifications. Our role is to offer advice on the structure of the courses available, and to assist the learner to make the most appropriate choice of level and subject.

Professional seafarers are able to access a whole range of courses that are designed to encourage continuing professional and personal development, from GCSEs to A Levels, professional diplomas, postgraduate courses, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Financial support in the form of scholarships and loans are available to assist with professional development and as such advice is offered on the best way forward and most appropriate options of funding for prospective learners.

Instructors, volunteers and staff with the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) are offered the opportunity to complement their voluntary work through a variety of courses and to enhance their professional qualifications.
