Continuing Professional Development opportunities

What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is the means by which professional people maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required in their professional lives.

It's a commitment to being professional; to keeping up to date and continuously seeking to improve. It's the key to optimizing a person's career opportunities.

The best employers in the shipping industry are increasingly recognizing CPD as a vital component to career progression.

Employers in the maritime sector, as elsewhere, are looking at their need for first rate managers and are increasingly turning to CPD programmes as an efficient method of nurturing their talent with the object of retaining and promoting it.

Open University CPD Courses

The Open University Centre for Continuing Professional Development (CPLD) is in a position to assist. It has launched a range of flexible online courses especially for people who wish to extend or update their skills but who are unable or have no appetite to commit to long-term study.

OU CPD courses offer new skills, knowledge and ideas which can be applied in the work place. Most take around 30 hours to complete and can be studied at a time and pace to suit each individual. They are competitively priced at just £495 per course.

The Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC) enthusiastically supports CPD for seafarers and welcomes this initiative by The Open University.

So we've negotiated with the OU for our Student Members to receive 10% off the course fees and an undertaking to offer any other support that may be required.
