College of the Sea

I'm a seafarer...
are there any special problems I face?

As long as you have a desire to learn and the motivation to succeed, most difficulties with OU studies encountered as a consequence of being a seafarer can be overcome. There are seafarers studying with the OU at all levels and, to prove the point, many successfully achieve graduate status every year.

On most courses you will need some access to a computer and the internet but tutorials are not obligatory.

Some courses in arts, social sciences, education, languages, mathematics and science may be linked to BBC broadcasts. If this is a problem, seafarers in the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy enjoy special access to the Open University Broadcast Loan Scheme. this allows you to borrow a recording of any OU television for a flexible period. Requests should be faxed to Broadcast Programme Loan Scheme Office (01908 233842) making it clear that you are a seafarer.

Information technology issues

For the seafarer, there might be some challenges because the OU embraces the latest advances in information technology and electronic communication. the use of course websites, computer conferencing with tutors and fellow students, video-conferencing and the electronic transmission of assignments are all encouraged.

All courses have some required or optional activities based on information and communication technology (ICT). For detailed information on software and hardware recommendations intending students should see our personal-computing pages.

If you are interested in a business school course, see the section on internet access 'More about OU Business School'.

Residential summer school

As part of your course, you may need to go to a residential school. This is usually at a UK university for a week during hte summer. business school courses tend to offer an online version if you cannot physically attend.

Seafarers are not automatically excused attendance at summer school however, every effort is made to accommodate their work patterns. Most find the opportunity to meet with their tutors and fellow students in an informal setting to be tremendously helpful and a rewarding experience.
