Slater Scholarships

Nautilus International
Nautilus International administers the John William Slater Scholarship with the assistance of The Marine Society.

The scholarship is for UK-domiciled serving ratings aspiring to their first Officer of the Watch certificate of competency.

Scholarships are currently worth up to £15,000 and can be used to offset the direct costs of obtaining the certificate of competency through any of the UK nautical colleges.

Red Ensign - British Merchant Navy
This sum is augmented by a potential further payment of £1000 on achieving the certificate, and applications can now be made at any time during the year.

Set up in 1977 and named in memory of former MNAOA General Secretary John William Slater, over the past 10 years the value of the fund has increased from £2500 to its present level.

It can be used for funding the necessary courses and for help with accommodation, travel, textbooks and living expenses whilst undertaking the qualification.

The money is available for four years from the date of the award (although you must start using it within two years) and is available to ratings over 20 years old permanently resident in the UK.

Applicants are required to complete an application form and provide references and a CV.

Be advised that the award cannot be made retrospectively: if you have already started your course, you are not eligible to apply.

To apply, email slater@ms-sc.org for an application form, or call 020 7654 7050 (but we would prefer you to email rather than call).

Alternatively you could download the expression of interest form below and send it to The Marine Society.
