College of the Sea

Masters degrees from Middlesex University

As a senior seafarer you’ll know your skills and knowledge are key to your future success.

But coming ashore to continue your education can be an expensive hassle.

Well, now you don’t need to come ashore to enhance your prospects…

What's on offer?

Middlesex University and The Marine Society are pleased to offer a work based learning route for senior seafarers to gain a degree that is entirely distance taught.

This is excellent news for seafarers. It means they don’t need to come ashore to study and can instead continue their careers at sea – and, not surprisingly, there’s a huge cost-saving!

And that’s not all. The Middlesex University/Marine Society partnership ensures that seafarers’ experience and qualifications are taken into account, thereby reducing the amount of work and expense involved in getting that degree.

Rather than simply reinforcing seafarers’ professional skills and competencies, this innovative approach focuses on nurturing a learner’s analytical and evaluative skills. This is important, as it offers the learner a qualification whose worth is widely recognised and therefore transferable within and beyond the maritime sector.

It is a work based learning programme. This means that much of the course is tailored to the individual needs and interests of the seafarer.

Assessment is through coursework that includes essays and project work, and a portfolio of your professional practice.

The qualification will be a MA or MSc in Professional Practice (xxxx xxxxx) from Middlesex University. What goes in the brackets is determined by the aspect of professional practice on which the qualification has focused (see 'programme planning' below).

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for this programme you must have held a current Class 1 Certificate of Competency for a minimum of five years.

Internet access is not a requirement.

Full tutor support is offered via email, fax, phone or post. This programme is seafarer-friendly so, as you’d expect, we’re sympathetic to lifestyle constraints and external factors that may cause study interruptions

There is no need to have passed any specific level of any examination but proficiency in the English language is a requirement.
