In a leading article, Jeremy Penn, Baltic Exchange CEO, analyses the massive effect that the surging Chinese economy has had on dry bulk freight and the difficult strategic decisions now facing shipping companies in the sector. On a lighter note, in ‘A mariner’s best friend’, Seafarer explores the history of ships’ pets and the unusual lives on board ship that many of them led. Michael Grey speaks out in defence of food miles and in praise of maritime ingenuity, and elsewhere in the magazine we examine the potential for climate change to open up lucrative shipping lanes in the Arctic.
The Spring 2008 edition of Seafarer is available now from MSSC HQ.
