Offshore Fleet Senior Engineer, based Gosport PO12 2AB

We are currently seeking a suitably qualified individual to take on the role of Offshore Fleet Senior Engineer (OFSE) for our offshore fleet. The position has a permanent base in Gosport, with occasional UK travel and afloat time.

The MSSC offshore fleet consists of our flagship, TS Royalist, a 32m sail training Brig, two modern 24 metre power vessels and two 35ft yachts (two of which are due for replacement over the next 18 months). The vessels operate around the UK and near continent during a nine-month training season, and usually refit in the Gosport area from December to February.

The Candidate:

In order to fulfil the responsibilities of this role, it is expected that the ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills:

  • Senior leadership in managing the engineering and safety function for a fleet or group of vessels (ideally power and sail), including those <300 tonnes;
  • Experience as a ship’s engineer;
  • Degree or appropriate MN or RN professional qualification in engineering;
  • Breadth across the marine mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering disciplines.

The Role:

The OFSE will have a key role in sustaining the capability and availability of MSSC’s offshore vessels to deliver sea-going experience for sea cadets and in ensuring safety for all personnel on board. The main purpose of the role is to support technical safety across the Offshore Fleet. This includes, but is not restricted to:

  • Supervising and monitoring material upkeep, defect rectification and health & safety aspects of all vessels under the umbrella of the MSSC’s Offshore Safety Management System.
  • Ensuring that vessels are safely operated from the technical perspective and maintained according to manufacturers’ instructions, current regulations, directives and good professional practice.
  • Planning and implementation of an effective seasonal and winter maintenance and survey regime to maintain the quality assurance of Lloyd’s Class, MCA Code of Practice and YDSA certification.

The role will occasionally involve provision of technical support to the fleet out of normal office hours. Whilst this is often possible by telephone/e-mail, there will be occasions when physical presence at or onboard a vessel is required.
