First Lieutenant TS John Jerwood
First Lieutenant, TS John Jerwood based out of Gosport, PO12 2AB.

Marine Society and Sea Cadets (MSSC) is a leading maritime charity in lifelong learning and personal development and is the governing charity of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), a civilian voluntary youth organisation engaging some 14,000 young people across 400 or so volunteer Sea Cadet Units, throughout the UK. The SCC offers a wide range of youth opportunities with the same enduring objective – to give young people the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun.
We are seeking to appoint a First Lieutenant (Second-in-Command) for TS John Jerwood one of our 24 metre power youth training vessels based in Gosport. The vessel undertakes 6 day voyages for up to 12 Cadets (aged 12 to 18) at a time, around the UK and near continent, from March to November. From December to February, the vessel undergoes winter maintenance, including a docking, usually in the Gosport area.
The key responsibilities and tasks of the First Lieutenant are to be the Second-in-Command of the vessel, whilst also acting as the Vessel Safety Officer and the Officer who organises and drives the weekly sea cadet training programme.
Applicants should have the requisite experience and hold an Offshore Yachtmaster (Power) qualification, commercially endorsed. They should also either hold a current Seafarer Medical Certificate, or be willing to obtain one. The ability to work effectively with young people as well as the permanent and relief crew members is essential. Ship system familiarisation, child safeguarding and any necessary sea safety course refresher training will be given to the successful applicant.
The particular demands of seagoing employment require the incumbent to be available for duty for prolonged periods and working hours necessarily need to be very flexible. Although overtime will not be recognised, the working and rest hours for this role will be within the confines of the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. The uncertain nature of the working hours are recognised by the holiday arrangements afforded.
For an informal discussion about the role please contact MSSC's Offshore Office on 02392 765888.
Applications should consist of a completed application form and equal opportunities monitoring form, both available from the website. You may submit your CV in support of your application, but the appropriate application form must be completed if you wish to be considered for this role.
Please email applications to email@example.com.
Closing date: Midday, Friday 21st December 2018
The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
