Marine Engineers (Two posts)

Location: TS John Jerwood and TS Jack Petchey based out of Gosport, PO12 2AB.

Salary: c. £29,000 per annum pro rata depending on experience

We are currently looking to appoint two permanent, full time Marine Engineers to work on board TS John Jerwood and TS Jack Petchey, our 24 metre power youth training vessels based in Gosport. The vessels undertake 6 day voyages for up to 12 Cadets (aged 12 to 18) at a time, around the UK and near continent, from March to November. From December to February, the vessels undergo winter maintenance, including a docking, usually in the Gosport area.

The primary task of the ship’s Marine Engineer is the maintenance and safe operation of all machinery on board the vessels. Responsibility spans the hull, structure, main and auxiliary machinery, electrical and electronic systems, fuel, water, LP air and hydraulics, and the planning and execution of maintenance periods. A comprehensive level of advice and support to the on board Engineers is provided by our two office based Engineering Technical staff

Applicants should have the requisite experience and should have completed an approved engine course. They should also either hold a current Seafarer Medical Certificate, or be willing to obtain one. The ability to work effectively with young people as well as the permanent and relief crew members is essential. Ship system familiarisation, child safeguarding and any necessary sea safety course refresher training will be given to the successful applicants.

The particular demands of seagoing employment require the incumbents to be available for duty for prolonged periods and working hours necessarily need to be very flexible.  Although overtime will not be recognised, the working and rest hours for these roles will be within the confines of the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006.  The uncertain nature of the working hours are recognised by the holiday arrangements afforded.

For an informal discussion about the role of Marine Engineer on board our power vessels, please contact MSSC's Offshore Office on 02392 765888.

Applications should consist of a CV and supporting statement. Without these documents, we will sadly be unable to consider your application.

We also request all candidates to complete an equal opportunities form (available below) and send this to us along with your application.

Please email your full application to recruitment@ms-sc.org. Alternatively, please print out and post your completed application to HR, The Marine Society and Sea Cadets, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW.

Closing date: Midday, Friday 22 February 2019

Interviews expected to take place week commencing 25 February 2019 at Gosport.

The successful applicants will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
